Bed and Breakfast

April 7th, 2007

A lot of foreign tourists get confused by the term B&B or Bed and Breakfast. In reality B&B accomodation is a very variable standard which may vary from a Hotel that offers a set ‘Bed and Breakfast’ price but more often refers to a large private dwelling which has a few rooms it rents out on this basis.

Bed and breakfast accomodation generally (but not always!) has fewer facilities than would be offered by a ‘proper’ hotel but is still comfortable. Typically bath and toilet facilities will be shared between all the rooms on a floor, this is one of the major differences.

St. James’s Palace

April 7th, 2007

The palace was built by Henry VIII on the site of the Hospital of St. James, Westminster. Much survives of the red-brick building erected by Henry VIII, including the Chapel Royal, the gatehouse, some turrets and two surviving Tudor rooms in the State apartments.
St. James’s Palace has been the setting for some of the most important events in Royal history.
Built largely between 1531 and 1536, St. James’s Palace was a residence of kings and queens of England for over 300 years. It remains the official residence of the Sovereign, although, since the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837, the Sovereign has lived at Buckingham Palace.

Hosting the start of the Tour de France will bring £70m to the capital in 2007,  The prestigious annual three-week cycle race will begin in London next July, after TfL paid £1.5m to host it , it predicts a boom for the capital’s hotel industry during three days of opening events in London. Transport commissioner Peter Hendy said: “Considering the amount of money we put in, we are getting a lot back over a short period of time.

This year’s Tour de France was won by American Floyd Landis as the gruelling 3,657km race finished in Paris on Sunday. Mr Hendy said: “London is going to be ready for this. It is the sort of spectacular that will be good for the UK. TfL “conservatively” estimated it would get a £70m return on the £1.5m it paid organisers Amaury Sport Organisation to host the start.

4. William Wallace statue, Scottish Borders
“To reach it, you have to walk for five minutes down a path through trees and the statue doesn’t come into view until the last moment. It is huge, carved from red sandstone and is a wonderful sight. Best to visit in the summer months when the trees are in full leaf for maximum impact and surprise. A great place high up above the Tweed river. And I’ve never met another soul there which adds to the atmosphere.”

3. Benmore Botanic Garden, Scotland
“This lies a few miles north of the Clyde coast port of Dunoon, and is easily reached by regular ferry from the mainland at Gourock - it’s a 20-minute crossing. Regardless of the weather, an exploration of this utterly enchanting place is guaranteed to provide an uplifting experience. Don’t forget to pick up a map of the grounds, and in case you spend more time here than budgeted for, take along a Thermos. The Bhutanese and Chilean glades are also worth the trek to reach them along gravel paths and bridges around the hillside. Remember to count the kids when you get back to the car. After a quick cuppa at the cosy coffee shop - if you have any energy left - carefully cross over the main road and pick up the way-marked forest trail south towards Puck’s Glen for adventure number two.

“This is the ONLY place where, on a clear day, you are able to view England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland from a single point. I’ve visited the Isle of Man many times over the past years and every time I go, this is one place I make sure to spend a couple of hours in total silence.

1. Antrim Coast Rd, Northern Ireland
“A perfect day out would be to drive along one of the most scenic roads in the world, the Antrim coast road, with the beautiful glens opening up to your left and the Scottish western isles on the horizon to your right. Stop at Waterfoot for a nature walk beside the waterfalls, carry on for lunch and a tot at Old Bushmills’ distillery, then three miles down the road to the beautiful Giant’s Causeway, before finishing off with a trip across the rope bridge over the Atlantic at Carrick-a-rede. Or go the other way to see the wonderful wildlife at Strangford Lough or Lough Erne.
